FAQs
A contractor quoted me crack injection on my stone foundation. Is that right?
No. Crack injection is a technique for poured concrete, where a discrete crack runs through a monolithic wall and can be filled with epoxy or polyurethane. A sandstone rubble foundation is not monolithic — it is hundreds of stones with mortar between them, and the water is coming through eroded joints and porous stone rather than through a single crack. There is nothing meaningful to inject. If someone quoted injection on this wall, they did not look at what your foundation is made of.
Can you seal or coat the inside of the wall instead?
Please do not. This is the single most damaging thing done to Zanesville foundations. Sandstone takes water into the body of the stone, and a coating on the interior face does not stop the water entering — it stops it leaving. The moisture then has to escape through the stone face, and when it freezes there the face sheets off.
